Audio calibration and room correction address this – ensuring your system performs at its best within your specific space.
Audio Calibration vs Room Correction
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they’re distinct processes.
Audio calibration covers the fundamentals: setting correct speaker levels so each channel is balanced at the listening position, configuring distances so sound arrives in sync, setting crossover points between speakers and subwoofers, and ensuring bass management is correct.
Room correction goes further. Capturing how your room affects sound, correction software applies digital filters to compensate for acoustic problems – frequency response, timing issues, early reflections, and uneven bass distribution.
Both processes are including in our audio calibration, and need to be understood in detail to ensure good results. As great as tools such as room correction are, they can also make the system sounds worse if not used properly.
Major Room Correction Systems
- Trinnov Optimizer — the most advanced system available. Uses a 3D microphone to map speaker positions and room acoustics in three dimensions. Found in the Trinnov Altitude processors. The gold standard for high-end home cinema. It also includes Waveforming, which is a groundbreaking approach to ensure even and tight bass in rooms.
- Dirac Live — available across a wide range of AV receivers and processors (Arcam, miniDSP, StormAudio to name a few). Offers excellent correction, including time domain correction, with intuitive target curve editing. The Bass Control module adds multi-sub optimisation and the latest feature, ART, now brings active technology to improve bass by using all speakers together to battle room issues.
- Audyssey MultEQ-X — most often found in Denon and Marantz receivers. The latest version allows professional-level control via a dedicated app, improving on the older auto-calibration approach. Whilst it doesn’t offer features such as time domain correction like Optimiser or Dirac, it’s range of controls and tools can still results in a great sounding system.
- ARC Genesis — Anthem’s proprietary system. Straight forward, however offers less control that other correction systems.
Subwoofer Integration
Bass calibration is often the area where professional setup makes the biggest audible difference. Low frequencies are heavily affected by room modes — standing waves that create peaks and nulls at different positions. A subwoofer that sounds overwhelming in one seat may be barely audible in the next.
Professional calibration addresses this through optimal subwoofer placement, phase and delay alignment with main speakers, level matching, and (where available) multi-sub optimisation. It is almost always recommended to take a multi sub approach in rooms. We can also help with the planning of this if needed prior to calibration to obtain the best possible results.
Does Room Correction Replace Acoustic Treatment?
No. They work together. Room correction software is effective however excessive decay times, flutter echo, and early reflections need physical treatment (absorption panels, diffusers, tuned bass absorbers). The best results come from combining sensible acoustic treatment with professional digital correction.
Key point: Running the auto-calibration microphone that came with your receiver is a starting point, not a finished result. Professional calibration uses better measurement tools, takes more readings, and applies corrections with an understanding of psychoacoustics — not just a flat frequency target.
