What Video Processors Do
A video processor sits in front of your display, and essentially acts as the new “brain” of the display. It handles tone mapping (how HDR content is adapted to your display’s capabilities), upscaling (converting lower-resolution content to your display’s native resolution), colour management, and source-specific optimisation.
For projector-based cinemas, a video processor can be transformative. For flat panels, the benefits exist but are less dramatic.

madVR Envy Strengths
The Envy’s GPU-based architecture gives it enormous processing power. Its dynamic tone mapping analyses each frame individually, adjusting HDR handling in real time.
Its user friendly interface makes it simpler to perform a basic set up to get you up and running, and is more intuitive for subjective, “to taste” tweaks. It also has a web based architecture, so is easier to integrate with controls systems or to calibrate, as you don’t need a physical connection between your laptop and the madVR itself.
It’s the more “cutting edge” option, with frequent firmware updates adding new features, such as dynamic subtitle overlay, motionAI (although we don’t personally recommend). Firmware updates are also over the internet and install within a few seconds.
madVR Envy Weaknesses
The Envy is fundamentally a PC, so comes with the usual quirks and occasional lock ups and reboots are not unheard of.
Hardware revisions happen regularly, so often you will not have the latest and greatest unit. Whilst most features continue to be available on the older units, this can be a frustration for some customers.
Processing delay is around 180ms, making it not suitable for gaming. New gaming modes are now available on some models, but the latency is still longer than the Lumagen even in it’s regular mode.
It only has a HDMI in and HDMI out. Whilst this works for most installs, there are times where extra flexibility of HDMI management can be helpful.
Lumagen Radiance Pro Strengths
The Lumagen’s FPGA architecture offers exceptional stability and longevity. Hardware refreshes do not happen very often, meaning the total ownership lifespan of the product is much higher, following brands such as Trinnov, where ongoing support is a staple of the product.
Multiple IO options, with different HDMI configurations available for both inputs and outputs if needed. This can help with HDMI issues or reduce handshake times in some setups.
By design, the electronics are low noise in nature, especially with the 5000 series. This can be important in high performance setups where reducing unwanted electrical noise and jitter is a key factor.
The form factor for the radiance pro is smaller than the madVR counterparts.
Lumagen Radiance Pro Weaknesses
The Lumagen on screen interface is less intuitive and user friendly than the madVR, making initial setup for inexperienced users a little more difficult.
No web interface, making calibrations or control system integration a little more challenging than a web based product.
Not as forward thinking as the madVR. It is very much designed to be good at the fundamentals of video processing, however doesn’t regularly release quality of life features.
Both Require Professional Calibration
This is the critical point. Neither processor delivers its full potential out of the box. Both need to be calibrated to your specific display using high end equipment. Without professional calibration, you’re accessing a fraction of what you’ve paid for.
Our perspective: Both are exceptional products. The madVR Envy tends to suit owners who want cutting-edge processing and are comfortable with a more technical setup process. The Lumagen Radiance Pro tends to suit those who prioritise stability, established calibration accuracy, and a proven track record. Either will significantly improve a projector-based cinema.
